Times Square is an iconic tourist destination any time of year, but the way it comes to life over the holidays is unlike anything else in the city. There are plenty of things to do for Christmas and New Year’s in and around Times Square.
Whether you want to be in the thick of the most popular events or experience some winter holiday Times Square traditions outside of peak times, Qube NYC is here to help guide your festivities!

Times Square’s Holiday Magic: What to Experience
Even those who have never been to New York City associate the gorgeous decor with holiday cheer. This is largely thanks to pop culture portrayals in classic Christmas films like Elf, Miracle on 34th Street, and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
The big screen portrayals of the magic of NYC pale in comparison to the real thing, and you’ve got to head out on the town to experience the magic for yourself.
The Christmas Spectacular and Holiday Shows
The 2025 performance of The Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes celebrates the dance company’s 100th year! Be sure to grab your tickets to this special centennial performance, which has extended its run through January 5 to give more people a chance to see the famous Radio City Rockettes.
Rockefeller Center Tree and Ice Skating
The Rockefeller Center Tree and its dazzling display of towering lights are the perfect backdrop for your holiday selfies with friends. This year’s tree is already on display and will remain open until mid-January. Time your visit to coincide with the tree lighting ceremony on December 3 from 7:00 to 10:00 PM, or explore some of the other holiday events at the location.
(The famous skating rink at Rockefeller Center offers a traditional holiday experience, but you can also take your skating party up a notch with a private chalet.)
Holiday Window Displays and Shopping
Even if your holiday shopping is complete and you don’t plan to spend a dime, you should head to the storefront window displays. Each year, these high-end retailers wow passersby with displays that range from minimal and chic to dazzlingly over-the-top. Be sure your path takes you past showstopping contenders like Bergdorf Goodman, Saks 5th Avenue, Macy’s at West 34th, Tiffany & Co., and FAO Schwarz.
Festive Dining and Seasonal Pop-Ups
If all you want for Christmas is an unforgettable bit of fun, head to the Untitled Hotel’s Rooftop for Mariah Carey’s Holiday Bar pop-up! With wall-to-wall Mariah-centric holiday decor, photo ops, and drink specials, this event promises to hit the high notes.
The Dead Rabbit is once again hosting their famed Jingle Jangle experience with a festive menu and decor that you have to see to believe. Seasonal drinks like Santa’s Helper and Gingerbread Man complement a delicious selection of pub fare.
If you crave festive dining, be sure to check out Ai Fiori. The elegant Italian spot on 5th Avenue in Midtown NYC is hosting both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinner specials.

New Year’s Eve in Times Square: The Ultimate Celebration
Times Square is the perfect place to ring in the New Year, so here’s your guide to saying goodbye to 2025 with style.
The Ball Drop: What You Need to Know
This year’s world-famous NYC ball drop features a new design (the ninth redesign in over a century). The official Times Square event begins at 6:00 PM on December 31. The Times Square official website will provide a minute-by-minute breakdown of the evening’s festivities.
Viewing Areas and Timing Strategy
The event is not ticketed, and viewing happens on a first-come, first-served basis. Viewers will be checked into security areas, and it’s important to note that there are no portable bathrooms, so please be prepared for a long wait without amenities.
If you’re looking for truly prime viewing, arrive by late morning. Later arrivals can still get a view from a bit further away, but if you’re getting there later than 5:00 PM, it’s likely you’re going to struggle to find a spot with a sightline.
Instead, you could check into one of the many hotels or book a table at a restaurant with a view of the Ball Drop. These include Renaissance New York, Marriott Marquis, Olive Garden, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., and Bar 54 at the Hyatt Centric.
Be wary of third-party sales promising “Ball Drop Passes.” Their allure of guaranteed views and bar hopping is often unrealistic considering the crowds, closed streets, and security measures.
If all-day waiting and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds are not your scene, many nearby NYE alternatives still benefit from the festive energy of the popular event.
If you want a curated and high-class evening, check out a cruise on the Hudson. Circle Line (ages 21+) promises NYC skyline views as we welcome 2026.
