Have you decided to bring in 2026 at Times Square? If so, you’ll be in great company. Around one million will be there in person, and over a billion will be watching around the world! Of course, being part of something so iconic requires planning, and we have the essential guide to making the NYE Ball Drop in Times Square an amazing experience.
Ball Drop Logistics: Everything You Need to Know
The ball will be sitting atop a flagpole at One Times Square. The best view will be along Broadway, from 43rd to 50th, and along Seventh Avenue.
Spots are secured on a first-come, first-served basis. While the kickoff does not begin until later in the afternoon, you’ll need to be there much earlier if you hope to be in a prime viewing area. Those who manage to snag great views are typically there by late morning, but the exact timing can also be impacted by weather. (The nicer it is outside, the earlier you’ll need to be there!)
When you’re ready to secure your viewing “pen” (barricaded areas), you’ll head to an access point at 49th, 52nd, or 56th Streets on 6th or 8th Avenues.
What You Can and Cannot Bring
Prohibited items include backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, lawn chairs/folding chairs, picnic blankets, large coolers, and alcohol. Expect bags to be searched.
You can bring a small bag that can be quickly searched, as well as snacks that will fit in your pockets, sealed bottles of water, warm clothing items, cameras, and any necessary medical supplies.

Surviving and Thriving on NYE in Times Square
Dress for Success: Weather and Comfort
Check the forecast and be prepared to bundle up. Layers allow you to adjust to different wind conditions and shifting temperatures throughout the day. Hats, gloves, scarves, hand warmers, and comfortable boots are all recommended.
The Bathroom Reality and Other Practical Tips
There are no bathrooms available once you’re in the pens, and you can’t leave and come back. Most people limit their liquid intake leading up to the event and use the restroom right before going through security.
In addition, be sure to pack some snacks that are easy to eat while standing and being jostled (like granola bars and nuts).

Alternative NYE Experiences Near Times Square
Indoor Celebrations and Restaurant Options
You can still be part of it all with more comfort if you choose an indoor celebration or restaurant option with a view of the Ball Drop. Hotels and restaurants offering this experience include Renaissance New York, Marriott Marquis, The Knickerbocker, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Olive Garden, R Lounge, Beast and Butterflies at the M Social, Bar 54 at the Hyatt Centric, and Tempo by Hilton at TSX Broadway.
Brooklyn and Outer Borough Alternatives
Beyond Times Square, New York is still New York, which means you can find vibrant and meaningful alternatives to the Ball Drop. In Brooklyn, Prospect Park provides fireworks and live music. Brooklyn Bridge Park offers gorgeous views of the skyline and plenty of nearby trendy bars hosting their own events. Coney Island will bring its signature quirky flair with a carnival vibe. The city is full of options!
Common Misconceptions
There are challenges to joining an event this big. First, there will be no public restrooms or licensed food and beverage vendors available in Times Square. Once you’ve gone through security and are in your spot, you’re in for the duration. And if you want a location with a great view of the Ball Drop, you’ll need to arrive early in the morning.
It’s an all-day event where you eat only the snacks you can put in your pockets and drink very little to avoid needing a bathroom break that will cost you your viewing spot. There’s also a chance you won’t see any of the live performances up close. You’ll watch most of the festivities from the big screens.
All that said, we’re not saying it’s not worth it! For many people, this is a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list event that will truly stay with them for the rest of their lives.
