Navigating the various ways to consume cannabis can be daunting for newcomers. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand each method: Flower: The classic method—grind, roll, and smoke. Flowers come in various strains, each offering unique effects. You can buy them in several quantities, including grams, eighths, or quarters, or opt for pre-rolled joints. Edibles: These are cannabis-infused foods and beverages, such as gummies, chocolates, and drinks. Edibles have a delayed effect, so start slow and give it time to kick in before consuming more. Tinctures: These are alcohol-based cannabis extracts designed for precise dosing, ideal for consistent use. Tinctures allow for easy adjustment of dosage and are taken sublingually (under the tongue). Concentrates: Made from the trichomes of the cannabis plant, concentrates like extracts, dabs, shatter, and budder contain high levels of THC. They can be vaporized using a vape pen or dabbed for potent effects. Topicals: Applied externally, topicals are infused with THC or CBD and used for pain relief or to manage anxiety and stress. Dosage Recommendations: Start small to gauge your tolerance. For edibles, begin with 5 mg, wait two hours, and assess how you feel. Smoking flower offers more immediate effects but also requires caution initially. Let your budtender guide you through these options to find what best suits your needs and preferences.
While there are various names like weed, marijuana, and pot, “cannabis” is the term that aligns with the plant’s scientific designation.
Cannabinoids are chemical substances in the cannabis plant that interact with receptors in the brain and body, producing a range of effects. Over 100 cannabinoids have been identified, with THC and CBD being the most prevalent.
THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol): This is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis, responsible for the euphoric “high.” The THC percentage on labels indicates its proportion relative to other cannabinoids and terpenes in the strain, not the total amount present. THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid): THCA is a non-psychoactive precursor to THC found in raw cannabis. It converts to THC when heated, such as during smoking or vaping. THCA is noted for potential therapeutic benefits, including relief from arthritis and chronic pain. Many consume raw cannabis for these benefits, as THCA does not induce a high. CBD (Cannabidiol): CBD is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid known for potential health benefits like reducing inflammation, anxiety, and pain. It’s the second most prevalent compound in cannabis. Products high in CBD and low in THC are recommended for those seeking therapeutic effects without a psychoactive experience. For more information on selecting products based on these compounds, consult our knowledgeable budtenders.
